Four Step Process back to top

Framing at OnlineWall.com is simple. With four easy steps, you can frame your artwork and have it ready for fast delivery. After you select a print, click on "see it framed," and you'll enter the frame shop.

Step 1: Setup

Wall Color:
To help you find a frame that matches your room's decor, select a wall color from the swatches to the right of your print. If you would like to see additional colors, click "more colors" to view and select from additional wall colors.

Cropping (removing your print's border):
Select "yes" to remove the white space border around your print or "no" to keep the white border. Note: This function is not available for some artwork.

Select "yes" to remove the white space border around your print or "no" to keep the white border. Note: This function is not available for some artwork.

Step 2: Choose a Frame Moulding back to top

OnlineWall.com uses only the highest quality wood, metal, and MDF materials to frame your print. Prior to building your frame, each length of moulding is hand-inspected to ensure it meets our stringent quality requirements. With OnlineWall.com, you're given the opportunity to choose your moulding in six different ways:

"Show" Drop Down Menu
Use this menu to sort mouldings by color, style, material, price, most popular, or to see all available mouldings. Once you choose a view, the "choose" drop-down menu (below "show") will prompt you with additional options.

1. View By Color
Browse frame mouldings by color using this view.

2. View By Style
With this view you can select from mouldings that are elegant, ornate, simple, or unique.

3. View By Material
This view allows you to select specific finishes, such as oak or gold wood.

4. View By Price
Use this view to see our four different pricing options.

5. View by Most Popular
See what frames are popular with our other customers by using this view.

6. View All
View all allows you to see an alphabetical listing of all of the frame mouldings OnlineWall.com offers.

Selecting a Moulding:
Once you've found a moulding you like, click on the moulding selection to the right of your print and this will automatically update your print image with the new frame. You can read the details for each moulding in the bottom box to the right of your print image (below the moulding selections).

Step 3: Choose a Mat back to top

The mat is the decorative board placed around your artwork to provide contrast and depth between the print and the frame. For your print, you can choose the matting materials and up to three mats.

Choosing
1. Select whether you want one, two, or three mats. If you don't want a mat, select "No Mats."

2. Once you've chosen the number of mats you want, select a color group from the displayed swatches, then choose a specific color from the available colors for that color group. If you have selected more than one mat, you will need to select colors for all of your mats.

3. Once you click on the color mat you want, your print image to the left will automatically update with the new mat.

4. Mat details are displayed below the mat image on the right side of the page.

Narrowing the selection:

1. Click on the link "Narrow Selection."

2. A pop-up window will appear with two tabs. Select the tab you wish to narrow your selection by - either price or material. Choose what you only wish to see and click "Apply." The frame shop will show what is available based on the criteria you selected.

Adjusting Mat Width:
Click on the "adjust width" link (next to the "Mat Width" description below the mat image) and, based on the number of mats you have chosen, a pop-up window will display one of these two windows.

1. A slider to adjust the overall mat width (available if choosing one mat, or if choosing multiple mats, this is available for the bottom mat).

2. If choosing multiple mats, you will see different width choices for the top and middle mats. These width choices are categorized by style.

About Mats back to top
OnlineWall.com offers a range of matting colors and materials to help customize your framed print. The mat boards are buffered to an alkaline pH to give the colors consistency, and flawlessly cut with a beveled edge.

How Many Mats Should I Choose?

Single Mat: A single mat gives your print a finished look. The best color choices for single matting are neutral colors such as blacks, grays, whites, and off-whites.

Double Mat: Double mats allow you to highlight a color within your print or add dimension. You can choose a top mat that highlights your decor colors and choose a bottom mat that highlights the print.

Triple Mat: Triple mats give you the option of adding excellent depth to your print. When emphasizing a special color in your print, consider using the middle mat as your highlight color for the most polished look.

Matting Materials:

Suede: Suede mats are stunningly beautiful and look rich and warm when framed, offering the appropriate amount of texture for depth without overwhelming the piece.

Fabric: Fabric mats are sophisticated and rich - perfect complements to traditional art and Decor. Fabric works best as the top mat, and can be combined with standard paper mats for double and triple matting.

Linen: Linen mats have a more prominent, yet still refined, weave. Linen mats make great top mats. Their subtle texture enhances the print without appearing overbearing.

Specialty Paper: Specialty paper mats include lattice work details, rag paper, and other interesting textural mats. We have hand-picked mats that will work well with framed posters and art, taking care that the textures will not compete with the print.

Paper: Standard paper mats are of the highest quality with bright, consistent coloring and a clean off-white core for fresh, crisp bevels. This category has the largest color selection.

Oversized Prints
Matting Oversized Prints: OnlineWall.com now offers framing for oversized prints (those greater than 28 x 36 inches or 36 x 28 inches). When you've selected an oversized item for framing, we will automatically display only those mats available for oversized prints.

Step 4: Choose a Glazing back to top
The clear material that secures and protects your print is called glazing, and our glazing materials are glass or acrylic. We offer eight different glazing options from which you can choose, although for larger frames only acrylic options are available.

Glazing
Available glazing options depend on the size of your framed artwork:
For frames smaller than 20" x 24," all glazing options are available.
For frames larger than 20" x 24," only acrylic options are available.

Glazing Options:
1. Standard Glass
2. Non-Glare Glass
3. Standard Acrylic
4. Non-Glare Acrylic
5. Standard UV Glass
6. Non-Glare UV Glass
7. Standard UV Acrylic

Glass:
The glass selections are all high-quality, framing-gauge glass.

Acrylic:
The acrylic selections have outstanding optical clarity and lightweight impact resistance.

UV Protection:
This option protects your print from the ill-effects of UV exposure and prevents fading.

Non-Glare:
This option minimizes reflections caused by lighting and therefore is excellent for hanging in highly-lit areas.

Decorating Advice back to top

While the best advice in choosing art and framing is to choose what you love, here are some additional pointers:

1. Complement your print with coordinating colors in your room's decor, but try to not choose colors that directly compete with the colors in your print. Let your artwork have the darkest and the lightest colors, thus causing the art to stand out.

2. All colors affect the colors around them, so use mats to manipulate colors in your print. A darker colored mat will cause the image to be more luminous. Choosing a lighter colored mat will soften the colors in the print. Selecting a neutral mat (whites, grays, tans) allows the colors in the image to remain true to their natural color. If you triple mat your piece, a light neutral color such as white or off-white as your bottom mat will often create a rich look and allow the middle and top mat to better highlight the colors in the print.

3. Use your decor as a guide. Often the best color ideas come from the area where you will be hanging your framed print. Survey your existing decor and get a feel for the colors. This can help you decide on the perfect color combination for your artwork.

Safety & Cleaning Information back to top

Child Safety:
If you choose to hang a frame in a child's room, choose from the acrylic options. This glazing is shatterproof and is recommended for a child's bedroom or playroom.

Cleaning Glass:
Dampen a cloth or paper towel with any glass cleaner to clean the glass on your frame. Do not spray directly on the glass; it may cause the liquid to possibly seep into the frame. Wipe clean until dry.

Cleaning Acrylic:
This type of surface should be cleaned with a soft, non-abrasive cloth dampened with lukewarm soap water. Wipe clean until dry.

Before You Frame Your Limited Edition back to top

MATS - allow for air space between print and glazing. This is important for minimizing humidity damage.

ACID-FREE MATS - prevent deterioration and yellowing of a print (recommended).
UV GLASS or UV ACRYLIC - limit the damaging effects of light.

When cropping a print, we may need to trim the paper edge, but we will never cut or cover artist notations below the print.
We will not dry mount a limited edition print. We use archival-quality tape to hinge prints to an acid-free backing.

Canvas Transfer

Excellent Value, Finest Quality, Choice of Formats

Our skilled artisans create the feel of an original painting with meticulous quality workmanship. Let us transfer your prints onto canvas with the museum wrap method (image goes to the edge of the surface, plain white sides) or the gallery wrap method (image wraps around the edge, and continues back toward the wall).

Optional Brushstrokes for Richer Surface Texture

For a small additional cost, our skilled artisans will apply brushstrokes, giving your piece an even more special look. We can stretch your canvas or provide the bars.

Canvas transfers are a great way to enhance any living space. We offer both gallery wrap and museum wrap canvas transfers. The museum wrap style stops the image at the front edge, while the gallery wrap image continues all the way to the wall. Canvas transfers are available on 90% of our prints.

Selecting a canvas transfer
Selecting a canvas transfer is easy! Find the particular print you are interested in, then click the "Transfer to Canvas" link. This will take you to the canvas transfers page for that print. There you will see the price and description for the canvas transfer.

How they are made
First, the print is coated, via spray or brush with a special acrylic that seizes the ink. After drying the resulting ink film is then carefully separated from the paper and embedded into high quality canvas. At this point, the picture has an image true to the original painting with a lustrous oil sheen and rich canvas texture.

Ready to hang
All canvas transfers come stretched on a custom made wood frame so they are ready to hang! Any border or decorative text will not appear on the canvas transfers, only the actual image.
